Pasties

These are an old Champion family recipe brought over from Land's End, England.
They are a baked pastry filled with ground beef, potatoes, and onions.

Ingredient List:

  • 3.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1.5 cups of shortening (Crisco or Lard)
  • 1 cup of water (approximately)
  • 3 or 4 medium potatoes, peeled & sliced
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 or 2 onions, peeled & sliced

Directions:

Sift the flour and salt together. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender until the pieces are the size of small peas. Gradually sprinkle water over mixture, mixing lightly with a fork after each addition; add only enough water to hold pastry together. Divide dough evenly into four pieces; on a floured surface, roll out each piece into a circle, and fill one half with sliced potatoes, ground beef, and onions. Fold over and crimp edges; put a small hole in top for vent. Bake on a lightly greased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

Yield: four pasties.

This recipe can also be made into a 13 x 9 inch pan. Just divide the dough in half, and roll out a top & bottom crust.

If you don't want to make the crust, just use "store bought" pie crust dough!
Doesn't taste as good, but saves time!
